MARGARET HARVEY MW, REGIONAL CHAIR NEW ZEALAND, Decanter World Wine Awards 2012, comments,

"Very smart, well-made style, with a pure passion fruit and gooseberry character overlaid with lime and guava aromas. Attractively smoky, with flinty minerality between papaya, ripe berry and lime zest flavours. There were some great wines in this class, but the Saint Clair Trophy winner stood out as a stunning example of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.”

Proximity to the ocean sees stronger maritime influences on the vineyards of the Lower Wairau Vallley - the daytime temperatures are still warm allowing ripening, but the night time temperatures are typically cooler than those generally found in Marlborough which promotes longer hang times, leading to powerful aromatics, greater concentration and flavour development. This is an incredibly pungent Sauvignon Blanc with powerful passion fruit, grapefruit and blackcurrant aromas and an underlying mineral note. The palate is intensely concentrated and full with a long, lingering finish. As well as scooping the best in show trophy over £10 for NZ Sauvignon at the Decanter Awards 2012, the 2011 Wairau was also placed on the Gold List at the UK Sommelier Wine Awards 2012.

From 1994 when wines from the first vintage all won medals including gold, the name Saint Clair has been synonymous with quality and its award-winning record continues today. Top International accolades include the trophy to Saint Clair/Matt Thomson for White Winemaker of the Year at the London International Wine Challenge, September 2008 and the coveted trophy for Best New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2005. Saint Clair Family Estate also has the distinction of being the first New Zealand wine company to win major international trophies for Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in the same year.
