What the critics say:

"An example of what great winemakers can achieve in tricky vintages. It's a more restrained style than in the past, owing to a cooler season, but it's still a lovely wine: fresh, focused and long with attractive gooseberry, pear and orange peel complexity."
Tim Atkin, Master of Wine, TimAtkin.Com

Kevin Judd, chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 years from its inception, created Greywacke in 2009. While not being a “cheap” drop, it delivers unparalleled pleasure for the pounds. You need to taste it to believe just how significant Kiwi Savvy can be in the capable control of master like Kevin Judd.

Taste: A refreshing sorbet-like medley of fresh lychee, grapefruit and honeydew melon laced with flinty minerality and finished with an infusion of mandarin and lime zest. A lively, invigorating wine with persistent grapefruit flavours and a steely blackcurrant tang. This vital “Savvy” is crisp on the attack, with a long, enduring finish the refreshes rather than pummels the palate.

Tech:: “The majority of the juice was fermented cool in stainless steel tanks using cultured yeast and a portion was filled into old French oak barriques, where it was allowed to undergo spontaneous indigenous yeast fermentation. All individual vineyard batches were left on lees and kept separate until late July, when the blend was assembled.”

What:: Serious “Savvy” by an Iconic winemaker from vineyards in mythic Marlborough. The name “Greywacke” was adopted by Kevin for his first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard, a sedimentary rock which is widely found in Marlborough Fruit was sourced from various vineyard sites in and around the Brancott Valley and the central Wairau Plains, specifically in Woodbourne, Renwick and Rapaura

Meet the winemaker:

Kevin Judd is an iconic winemaker who, while head winemaker at Cloudy Bay, brought Kiwi “Savvy” onto the world’s palate, and the spotlight on the now renowned Marlborough region.  His new venture, Graywacke, allows him to get back to the roots of making wines that resonate with resounding tones of tightly wound tension and unambiguous beauty. Kevin is no longer a commercial winemaker building blends that change as little as manipulatively possible from vintage to vintage.
